During this year our focus will be on US history. We begin the year by learning about geography and map skills. After that we begin our history study starting with 13 colonies and work our way to the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War. I know you will love learning about our country’s history.

Reading
By 4th and 5th grade, we have moved from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” We focus a lot on comprehension skills and strategies. Throughout the year we will be focusing on different comprehension strategies and skills so that you will be equipped to tackle all types of text.

Miss Smith’s Bio
My name is Danielle Lee Smith, and I am a graduate of Washington State University with a B.A. in Elementary Education and an endorsement as a reading specialist.  I am in my second year of teaching in a multi-age 4th and 5th grade classroom.  I truly love teaching and enjoy witnessing my students' educational growth.  I believe that education is an awesome vessel for future journeys.  In my spare time I love to be outdoors.  This last summer I traveled throughout Thailand and spent time river rafting, learning to cook Thai food and scuba diving. I also hiked Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, went camping near Crater Lake, and kayaked in the San Juan Islands.  In addition, I made time to take some additional summer seminars and read some fantastic books.  If I am not in the classroom during the school year I like to draw, run, play soccer, and read.  I was born in Nebraska but moved to Washington when my father accepted a position as a professor at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.  I have one older brother who is an architect in Boston, a twin sister that is a graduate school in Iowa, and a younger sister still in high school. I look forward to a wonderful year of learning.
