AVID 2006-2007 ____________________________________________________________ |
January 2006
Greetings:
In case you haven’t heard, the time is getting short to apply for the AVID program at Decatur High School next fall. Registration is approaching quickly and your student may miss a great opportunity. If your student is in the Decatur service area and has desire, determination, and commitment; good attendance and citizenship; or perhaps wants to be the first in the family to attend a four-year university, then this is an option that shouldn’t be missed. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is designed to help students who would like the opportunity to attend a four-year college or university in the future, but feel support is necessary in order to take more challenging classes and navigate the many requirements of the college admissions process. This process begins as soon as your student enters high school. Time management, study skills, and college information issues are discussed and practiced routinely in this class which can be taken for up to four years as an elective during the regular school day.
More information is available on-line at the national AVID web site that supports this program http://www.avidonline.org/, or through your local Decatur AVID Coordinators, Ms. Nancy Merkle (Room 203 or telephone 253-945-5228) or Ms. Joan Haugen (Counseling Office, telephone 253-945-5217).
An application is attached for your convenience. Consideration will begin immediately; an interview is required, and final acceptance will be confirmed before school is dismissed in June. There is limited space available in this course, so apply now to receive consideration. If you have already applied, it isn’t necessary to submit another application. Interviews will be scheduled very soon. If you do not reside in the Decatur service area, you may contact the high school in your area for information on how to apply for AVID at your high school
Applications for the Decatur High AVID program may be returned to Mrs. Nancy Merkle or Ms. Joan Haugen, AVID Coordinators at Decatur High School, 2800 SW 320th Street, Federal Way, WA 98023.
