A college Preparatory Program offered at Decatur High School

What is AVID?

·        A structured, college preparatory program designed to support students who are interested in attending four-year colleges or universities and currently have a GPA between 2.5 and 3.5.

·        A regularly scheduled academic elective class designed to support students who are willing to work hard in an academically rigorous curriculum including Pre-AP courses, but need extra support and guidance.

·        A motivating program for students who would like to learn “coping skills,” develop career awareness, and obtain information necessary for successful admission into a four-year college or university

Who should apply?

·        Will be in grade 9, 10, or 11  in the fall.

·        Have a GPA between 2.5 and 3.5.

·        Have desire, determination, and commitment.

·        Have good attendance and citizenship.

·        Are the first in the family to attempt college admission.

What is the curriculum?

 

·        Essential Strategies in writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading.

·        College careers and exploration.

·        Subject-specific tutoring.

 

What are the course requirements?

 

·        Simultaneous enrollment in rigorous college-prep courses.

·        Satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes.

·        Maintenance of the AVID binder with assignment/grade record sheets and daily notes in all classes.

·        Completion of all homework assignments and commitment of at least two hours of homework every night.
