Welcome to the 06 07 school year. Attached you will find a list of books and synopsis of all possible books (60 pages 251kb in pdf format) that may be assigned to your student in English courses. These books have been approved by the Board of Directors of Federal Way Public Schools and meet the appropriate developmental level for the grade level assigned. English teachers will be sending home a list of books which will be used in their classes.
You can support your student by reading along with him/her and discussing books at home. This habit will help make students life long readers and support student achievement. Students will read, write, discuss and think about good literature throughout the school year.
Good literature usually reflects life as it is. Human conflict has been a central theme of literature since stories were told on walls in the form of pictures. Material in these books is meant to challenge students to think deeply about our world, and as in all art, it is possible that students or parents may come across issues and language that may seem offensive out of the context of the novel. Please feel free to contact your English teacher if you would like to discuss the reasons for specific selections included on the list. You also have the option of requesting an alternative assignment.
Parents are children's first teachers. We encourage you to read these books so that as parents and guardians you can discuss their content with your students and participate in their learning experience. Thank you for all your support!
