Dear valued Parents, Students and Community Members,
Welcome
to Federal Way High School, the oldest secondary school in the Federal Way
School District. A rich history and diverse student body is complimented by
rigorous standards in every subject area
A devoted and professional staff committed to providing for all students a
standards-based, relevant curriculum in a safe and supportive learning environment
is what makes Federal Way High School so special. To produce a climate with
high academic expectations within a supportive, diverse school culture, our
staff is dedicated to small learning communities, rigorous courses, and respectful
interactions among staff and students.
At Federal Way High School, our academic focus is standards-based instruction
with an emphasis on inquiry/critical thinking. To meet the needs of all students
academically, we differentiate instruction in our classrooms to address the
post high school goals of all our students.
For students who desire a challenging and rigorous curriculum, we offer Pre-AP
and AP (Advanced Placement) classes in English, history and science. AVID
(Advancement Via Individualized Determination) is another program that is
a college preparatory class with a focus on organizational and goal-oriented
skills. A new academically challenging program for this year's Class of 2010
is called the Cambridge Preparatory Academy. Eagle Vision is a tutoring program
offered everyday after school.
To address the needs of the "whole" student, not just academics,
Federal Way High School offers a wide variety of programs centered on students'
interests, cultures, hobbies and other extra-curricular activities. We also
instituted a comprehensive student recognition program. Be sure to read over
the extensive list of academic and student programs, as we hope to provide
all of our young men and women an "extra curricular" connection
to Federal Way High School.
Currently, high school students need to accumulate 23.5 credits to graduate
from high school. The Graduating Class of 2008 and beyond will need to accumulate
23.5 credits, pass all the High School WASL and develop a 13th Year Plan and
Culminating Project in order to earn a diploma.
As you can see, the stakes are high and I believe Federal Way High School
is up to the challenge. We will need the broader Federal Way Community to
help in this endeavor from parents, to businesses, social agencies and community
volunteers. Together we can meet these challenges. At Federal Way High School,
failure is not an option.
I am honored to be serving the Federal Way High School Community.
Sincerely,
Lisa Griebel
Principal FWHS
