It is important to note the distinction among the terms graduating, practicing graduation, walking, and picking up a diploma. To "graduate" from Federal Way High School, a student must meet the graduation requirements of earning 23.5 credits in the right categories, complete a master portfolio, complete a 13 year plan, and pass the WASL requirements. A student must pass the reading and writing WASL (or a state approved equivalent). A student must pass the Math WASL (or a state approved equivalent) OR stay in a math class, pass the math class, and continue to take the Math WASL. To "participate in graduation practice" , a student must have met the graduation requirements and completed senior checkout. To "walk" (also knows as participate in the graduation ceremonies at the Tacoma Dome) a student must meet the graduation requirements, turned in a senior checkout form, and maintain appropriate standards of behavior up to and including the ceremony. To "pick up a diploma" and final transcript after school is out, a student must have met the graduation requirements AND paid all outstanding fines and fees.
For graduating classes of 2009
Students must pass the WASL in reading and writing to graduate from high
school. In addition, state lawmakers recently made changes to the Math WASL
graduation requirement. Students must
· pass the Math WASL or Math WASL alternative OR
· continue to earn one math credit (or career and technical course
equivalent) AND take
the Math WASL each year until graduation.
· students enrolled in our Student Support Services program may have
slightly different
graduation requirementscontact your childs case manager if you
have any questions.
Please refer to the WASL information page for more information regarding WASL and WASL alternatives.
