Dear Parent or Guardian,
I would
like to share some important news about your student’s results from the spring
2007 High School Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). The
individual score report is being sent home today with your student. This report will also be mailed to you.
Students must pass the WASL in reading and writing to
graduate from high school. In addition,
state lawmakers recently made changes to the Math WASL graduation requirement.
For the graduating classes of 2008-2012, students must:
·
pass the Math WASL (or Math WASL alternative—see attached sheet), OR
·
continue to earn one math credit (or career and technical course
equivalent) AND take the Math WASL
each year until graduation.
·
students enrolled in our Student Support Services program may have
slightly different graduation requirements—contact your child’s case manager if
you have any questions.
If your student passed the reading, writing, and/or math WASL,
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
If your
student did not pass all sections of the WASL, we are here to assist your
student in completing this graduation requirement. Please be aware of the information below. In addition, refer to the attached page
“Certificate of Academic Achievement Options”, which lists WASL alternatives
such as Test Score Comparison, Collection of Evidence, and WASL/Grades
Comparison.
Summer Opportunities
·
Students who need to pass one or more sections of the WASL may
retake the WASL this summer at Federal Way High School on August 6 through August
9. Students must pre-register for the August WASL between June
8 and July 8. Please register online at www.k12.wa.us/waslregistration
or by calling 1-866-400-WASL (9275) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday–Friday.
Make sure to have your child’s WASL score report, as you will need your child’s
State Student Identifier (SSID) number, which is printed on the front page of
the report.
·
A
select number of students who qualify based on WASL scores may access a free
summer program to provide WASL and WASL alternative support. A district
representative will contact students who qualify to explain this summer option.
2007-2008
School Year Opportunities
·
Students
in the graduating Class of 2008 who still need to pass the reading and/or
writing WASL will be placed in a senior English class designed to prepare
students for the spring 2008 reading and writing WASL or WASL alternatives.
·
Students
in the graduating Class of 2008 or 2009 who did not pass the math WASL will be
scheduled into a math class (Applied Math, Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra,
Pre Calculus, Calculus, or Advanced Placement Statistics). In order to meet the
new state requirement, students must earn credit in their math class AND take the
math WASL in the spring of 2008.
·
Math
WASL preparation and WASL alternative classes will be offered 7th
hour (2:10pm-3:00pm) for students interested in earning a Certificate of
Academic Achievement. Students earn
this certificate in addition to a high school diploma by passing the reading,
writing, and math WASL.
Your student’s learning
is extremely important to us. We want to partner with you to make sure your
student learns the skills needed not only to pass the WASL and complete all
state and local graduation requirements but also be prepared for those next
steps after high school, whatever they may be.
If you have questions about the WASL or WASL alternatives,
