Hello Green Gables Families! Speech-language therapy services are in full swing. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Katherine Hinkle, and I am Green Gables Elementary School's full time Speech-Language Pathologist. I have worked in the Federal Way School District since 1998 and have also supported students at Camelot, Olympic View, and this year Sequoyah Middle School. Before that I worked in long-term care facilities and for home health agencies from North Seattle to Centrailia, Bellevue to Bremerton. Now you know why I decided to stay closer to home. Another reason is that I have two wonderful boys who attend Green Gables. Did you know that Speech-Language Pathologist's are known by different names, can work in many settings, and work with a variety of communication disorders and differences? You may find the acronym "SLP" after a Speech-Language Pathologist's name, but you may also hear them being referred to as an "SLP", "Speech Therapist" or "Speech Teacher". In addition to working in the schools, you will find Speech-Language Pathologists working in private practice, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, universities, and developmental centers to name a few. When communication disorders affect a child's school success, it may be necessary for a school Speech-Language Pathologist to work with that child. SLPs can help children to improve their speech sounds (articulation), language, voice, or fluency skills. They also help emerging communicators to use pictures or computers for understanding and self-expression. Speak to your child's classroom teacher if you have concerns about your child's speech and/or language skills impacting his or her school success or contact me at (253) 945-2722. As always, I am excited about devoting my time and energy to Green Gables this year and look forward to continue to work with all of the wonderful Green Gables families. |
