Handbook
- VIII. Health Services
Health
Services
Our nurse is in the building twice each week and always on call in
emergencies. In addition, a health room assistant is available. For
care of ill or injured students, the Lake Dolloff office staff is
trained in first aid and CPR procedures. Because of limited facilities
for the care of ill or injured children, it is important for the school
to have up to date information about what parents would like us to
do in case of an emergency. Please be sure we have an emergency telephone
number where you, or a person you designate, may be reached. Each
fall parents are requested to fill out forms which give information
of any student health problems. Please keep us informed of any change
in your child’s health status and activity restriction.
Medication
We are unable to give any medication at school without a written
request from a doctor or dentist and a parent signature. This ruling
applies to all over-the-counter medications including aspirin, vitamins,
cough drops, throat lozenges, etc. as well as prescription medicine.
Students cannot bring any medication, prescribed or over the counter
to school. All medication along with the doctor’s written instructions
must be delivered to the health room by an adult. Medication needs
to be in its original container. Ask your pharmacist for a duplicate
container if you need to divide medication between home and school.
No-Nit
Policy
We maintain a “no-nit” policy in efforts to control the spread of
lice. This means that students will not be admitted to school if there
is any visible sign of lice or lice eggs (nits). If evidence of lice
is discovered while the child is at school, a parent will be called
and asked to take the child home from school. Students may return
to school when a) they have been properly treated for the lice problem,
and b) when “no-nits” are visible in the hair. Upon return to school
the student will be checked by the health room assistant or office
staff.
Health
Screening
Vision screening for near-sightedness, and hearing screening are given
at school. Parents are advised if the results show a need for additional
follow-up. Screening for scoliosis (curvature of the spine)is done
at fifth grade. These are screening services only and do not take
the place of regular examinations performed by your eye specialist,
dentist or family physician.
Physical
Examinations
Physical examinations by a medical practitioner are recommended,
but not required, for all students on initial entry into school and
at grades three, five, seven, and ten. Immunizations Washington State
law requires that all students K-12 must be immunized against diphtheria,
whooping cough, tetanus (DPT), polio, measles (rubella), mumps, rubella
(three-day German Measles), and Hepatitis B. The law states that parents
must fill out and sign a certificate of immunization status form giving
the month and year of each dose of vaccine; or evidence of initiation
of a schedule of immunizations; or exemption for medical, personal,
or religious reasons.
