Dear Meredith Hill Families,
I am delighted to be
working at Meredith Hill this school year as your school counselor!
I have a Master of Social Work and am a certified school social
worker. I have three children and a spouse who offer me many opportunities
to grow as a parent and a human every day. Please introduce yourself
to me when you see me. My phone number is 253-945-3208. I am available
to parents by phone calls or visits.
As your new Meredith
Hill counselor, I will be working with students, parents and staff.
I have begun teaching Kelso's choices in the kindergarten through
third grade classes. This is a conflict management program for children.
They are taught that they can try to solve their small problems
by picking two "Kelso's choices". They are encouraged
to go to a trusted adult if they have big problems.
I am available to work
with students one to one who have concerns that may be interfering
with their learning. This is usually short term and is done at the
student's recesses. I can help resolve student conflicts after they
have tried to solve the conflict themselves. As needed, I will be
available to offer small groups for students who need opportunities
to practice social skills, look at family life transitions or the
transition to junior high.
I can be a resource
to parents who have concerns about their students and need a listening
ear to problem solve. As I get to know more of the Federal Way community,
I will be able to provide information about community resources,
parenting classes, and counseling resources. If you have questions,
call and I will find out. Feel free to drop by my office any time!
Sincerely,
Patty EagleCruz

GREAT BODY SHOP
Again this year we will
be piloting "The Great Body Shop," a student newsletter
for health and substance abuse prevention for all K-6 students.
The program combines several course units into one comprehensive
monthly newsletter.
Each month in the school
newsletter, you will receive information about the monthly theme
and how you can reinforce the topic at home that your child is learning
in the classroom.
Each month, students
will receive their own copy of "The Great Body Shop" devoted
to a health topic. The topics will include nutrition, community
health and safety, functions of the body, injury prevention and
personal safety, substance abuse prevention, and physical fitness.
Each unit contains information to help your child understand his/her
body, the way it works and the best way to keep healthy. The newsletter
also provides a reading opportunity in a non-fictional text. There
are very few materials written for the early years in non-fiction
format. This will help to prepare our students for the State Washington
Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).
Please talk with your
child about the lessons in "The Great Body Shop". Please
feel free to provide comments about the newsletter. Together we
can ensure that this program assists your child in making the kinds
of decisions about his/her body that will keep him/her healthy,
drug free, and ready to meet the challenge of the future.
October's theme is "Body
Systems".
The units for each grade
include:
Kindergarten: "The Five Senses"
Grade 1: "Head to Toe"
Grade 2: "How You Think"
Grade 3: "The Better To See You"
Grade 4: "Let's Talk Teeth"
Grade 5: "Your Central Nervous System"
Grade 6: "Cells"
We all learn in different
ways. Discuss with your child which way they think and learn best.
Some people learn by
listening and talking; some people learn by doing. People who learn
by doing like to touch and feel; they like to move their bodies.
Other people learn by seeing and recreating what they see in some
type of art work. Their eyes are their favored way of learning.
There are those that learn through rhythm; music and song are their
strengths. Add music to their learning and the information will
be remembered and understood more easily. There are learners who
are logical, who learn through numbers and patterns. There are people
who learn more easily by discussing with others and people who learn
more easily by themselves. Most of us have many ways we learn. Finding
the best way for your child would be helpful in knowing how to help
your child with homework and test preparation.
The WASL Scores are UP!
Meredith Hill fourth
grade WASL scores are something to celebrate. More and more of our
students are reaching standards in reading, math and listening.
1999 2000
Reading 63.3 77.3

Writing 56.7 56.0
Listening 70.0 78.7
Families can continue
to support student achievement by:
· Making sure children attend school on a regular basis
· Establish a quiet area in your home where children can
do their homework.
· Set aside at least 20 minutes a day to read with or to
your child.
Thanks for all the support you've given the students!
Red Cross Relief
Fundraiser
Meredith Hill 6th graders
held a fundraiser last week to raise money for the Red Cross Relief
Fund for victims of the terrorist attack. They earned over $600!
A local Girl Scout troop earned a little over $200 to contribute
to the fund. The total money earned was $871. Thank you to everyone
who helped contribute to this worthy cause!
Dismissal Time - Make It Safe for Kids!
If you pick up your
child at dismissal time, please park your car in the designated
areas and wait for students to be dismissed. This will make it much
safer to students who are picked up, those who walk, and those who
ride the various busses who serve our school. Your are welcome to
come to the outside door to wait for your child to exit the classroom.
