Heritage Doll Project

Heritage Doll

Social Studies Project

This project has three parts:

1. Family discussion, notes, and map

2. Designing your doll

3. Reporting to the class and

presenting your doll

Part One, The Family Discussion

Talk with your family about your cultural heritage. Talk about your ancestors. Where did they come from? What languages did they speak? Did they have any traditions or cultural practices that were unique? How did they dress? Find their lands of origin on a map. Use books or the internet to support your discussion. Record your family discussion on the sheets provided. Create or print out a map to refer to when reporting to the class.

Part Two, Designing Your Doll

With the help of family pictures/records, pictures from the internet or pictures from books, dress a clothespin doll to represent your family heritage. Most families are a melting pot whose ancestors came from many different lands. Select only one of those lands to be represented by your doll. Use the clothespin given to you in class to create your Heritage Doll. If you would like to represent more than one ancestor's heritage, feel free to ask for another clothespin.

Part Three, Reporting to the Class and Presenting Your Doll

Present your doll to the class.

Share information about:

•  Country of origin

•  Traditions

•  Language spoken (maybe even a few words or phrases)

•  Interesting family tales, if known

Due Date: May 28 th through May 30th

We will present our dolls to the class in small group settings. Each student will meet with four groups of three students to start. This allows presenters to feel more in command during their presentation time. You will have NO homework other than spelling during the week before this project is due.
