As the school year progresses,
your child will be learning a great deal of ASL (American Sign Language).
Although not required for my class, I do recommend the following book
if you would like to learn to sign with your child:
Random House Webster's American
Sign Language Dictionary by Elaine Costello, Ph.D. (The ISBN# is 0-679-78011-4
and it can be found at Barnes and Noble or Borders in Federal Way)
Snack policy:
Mr. Brown tends to be a "snacker" so I don't
mind if students do either. I would ask that your child bring a healthy
snack to school though. Examples may include granola bars, fruit, vegetables,
juice, etc. I would ask that you please
DO
NOT send Twinkies, Ding Dongs,
Chocolate Bars, Lolly Pops, Soda, etc...Students will not be allowed
to eat these snacks during snack and chapter book time (sorry, but no
exceptions on this one).
Homework: Other than spelling tests, homework
kind of depends on whether or not students finish assigned tasks in
class. I believe family time is important so I don't often assign a
lot of homework. In the afternoons, I try to give the students a study
hall whenever possible in order to get unfinished work completed.
Take Home Folders: Each night, I ask that you
check your child's backpack. Any finished papers, newsletters, office
information, lunch menus, etc. will be in their take home folder for
you to read (folders are on the 4th grade supply list). If there
are any notes or items that you need me to get/read, just
put them back into this folder as I will also be checking
them each morning. I will be sending home a letter on the first day
of school explaining these.
Volunteers: TBA throughout the year for field trips,
etc...
