News From Mrs. Scott

September 17, 2007

We have had a great first two weeks of school. We have done many getting to know you activities, an art project and have gotten right into reading, writing and math! We have completed all of our district required reading and math testing and I will have those results ready to share with you at conference time.

In reading we have just finished reading a chaper book called Horrible Harry Moves Up to the Third Grade. We did several graphic organizers examining character traits. We also did a comprehension and vocabulary packet covering the book. This week we will read our first story in the 3rd grade basal. We will begin working in groups after we receive the reading test results.

In math we have been doing a unit from the Investigations curriculum called Mathematical Thinking at Grade Three. We have been working on addition fact strategies, problem solving as well as working with money. This week we will continue to work on these areas as well as adding some number sense and graphing activities. You will see your child's first fact page coming home as the first page in their homework packet. Have them say the answers to these out loud several times each night. I will test them on this page on Friday and if they can do at least 25 in one minute they will move on to the next strategy the following Monday. Next week we will move into working out of the Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley math textbook on a unit covering place value.

In writing we did a complete writing process project entitled A Slice of My Summer. We made a slice of watermelon for the cover and the writing described some of their favorite summer activities. These published works are displayed on the bulletin board outside our classroom. This week we will do another writing process piece entitled The Greatest Kid which will be a writing about themselves. I will be keeping their writing projects in a portfolio here at school and will share them with you at conference times.

We have read the first article in National Geographic and will be finishing the magazine over the next couple of weeks. The price for this subscription will be $2.50. At this time I am asking you to send a check for this amount made out to Meredith Hill. The magazines will be coming home for your child to keep when we finish each issue.
