1st Grade/2nd Grade Multiage Syllabus 2005-2006

Reading:
Students receive instruction in reading strategies, phonics, vocabulary development and daily language practice. They will also work on listening and speaking skills. Students will be instructed at their ability level through the use of grouping. All groups will work on comprehension, accuracy, and fluency skills.
Spelling:
Formal spelling tests will begin the first two months of school. Inventive spelling is encouraged in writing.
Handwriting:
D’Nealian printing is taught in 1st grade to smooth the transition to cursive writing in 2nd grade. 2nd Grade will begin cursive writing in December. Emphasis is on quality penmanship as a means of clear communication.
Math:
Students will be taught from the Investigations program using manipulatives to develop concepts. Problem solving will be emphasized throughout the year. Students will enhance their understanding by using pictures, numbers, and words. Calendar is used daily to practice patterns, money, time, counting, days & months, place value, and graphing.
Science:
Students will explore three district science kits with hands-on experiments and activities.
Social Studies:
My Family and Me is integrated in theme areas.
Art:
A variety of art projects will be presented with theme orientation throughout the year.
Technology:
Students will become familiar with technology terms and parts of the computer. They will practice math, reading, and language skills on a variety of programs in the computer lab.
Health:
We will be using The Great Body Shop health curriculum throughout the year.
