Beluga whales are carnivores. They feed on 100 distinct bottom-feeding animals. Beluga whales typically dive 10 ft. deep when feeding. They tend to eat fish such as cod, flounder, squid, octopus, crab, and shrimp. Beluga whales have 34 teeth, and these teeth are meant for grabbing the prey. These teeth are not meant for chewing, so the food they eat is swallowed whole. These animals typically eat 50-60 pounds of food per day! Belugas use sound to locate their food. They make clicking sounds, and listen for the echo to find the location of the food. |
