Fifth Grade
Ms. Judie Price
Room 306
Welcome to fifth grade in Room 306! Here's a quick overview of what we will be studying this year in Reading, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science .
READING
Reading instruction will be centered on a five-component model. Included in this are: whole group, small group, one-on-one, silent reading, and oral reading. Students will read trade (library) books at their own reading level while basic skills such as comprehension and vocabulary will be explored through classroom activities and handouts. Students will read silently in class daily and take quizzes on books they complete to check for comprehension. Fifth graders will also be using the magazine subscription Storyworks as an additional reading resource throughout the year.
LANGUAGE ARTS
We will integrate language with most subjects, and students will be completing a variety of writing activities this year. We will have Writer's Workshop where students will have the opportunity to write stories, daily journal writing, editing practice, and paragraph writing. Students will also practice proper grammar skills and put these skills to use when they write.
I plan to generate monthly spelling lists by using our Word of the Day. Each day a student will suggest a word we have found in our daily work or one they have found in a literature book. We will add the word on a bulletin board as well as in their planners. At the end of the month, we will have a spelling quiz. I may also use these words to give a vocabulary quiz since we will be writing down the meanings of our daily words after looking them up in the dictionary.
MATH
Our district has adopted curriculum maps/pacing calendars for each grade level. For each unit we will use a variety of resources including lessons from our textbook (Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley), Teacher to Teacher problem solving, Origo Resources, and Fundamentals. We will focus on various ways to solve math story problems as well as computation skills. Fifth graders are expected to be fluent in all their multiplication and division facts. Many students will need to practice these facts at home as part of their homework. I send home a math story problem each week for students to solve showing the steps they used to get the final answer. Look for these on the back of their Reading Logs!
SOCIAL STUDIES
Our district adopted a textbook series by Harcourt last year. Fifth graders will study The United States: Making a New Nation using a textbook as well as related worksheets.
SCIENCE
Fifth graders will be using the district kits on these topics: Ecosystems, Land, and Levers. If time allows, we may add some other mini-units also. Students will be required to present a science display at our annual science fair during the second semester.
SPECIALIST TIMES
Our specialist times (music, health & fitness, and library checkout) are from 9:00 – 9:40 four days out of six since our school has a 6-day rotating schedule. Look for the week's specialist schedule in your child's planner at the beginning of each week.
