Mission

The mission of the Sacajawea Middle School Library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. (Information Power for Washington State, 1991 OSPI.) Information literacy, the ability to find and use information to solve problems, is a keystone of lifelong learning. Creating a foundation for lifelong learning & a love of reading is at the heart of the Sacajawea library mission.

Goals

In order to realize our mission our goals include:

  1. To provide resources to provide enrichment for students and staff as well as those which support the curriculum.
  2. To provide instruction in information literacy that meets the learning needs of students and staff.
  3. To work with staff to develop resource- based curriculum assignments and lessons.
  4. To create and sustain an environment that encourages independent learning, collaborative inquiry, information literacy, and lifelong learning.

Visiting the library - Students

Students may visit the library BEFORE and AFTER SCHOOL, DURING LUNCH, and any period WITH TEACHER PERMISSION with a signed Warrior Planner pass.

When you visit we ask that you do the following things.

    1. Remember to keep your voices low. The library is a very big and often busy place. Voices tend to carry, and this is one of the few quiet study areas on campus.
    2. There can be no eating or drinking in the library. This includes water bottles. Please keep these items in your backpacks as they are incompatible with books and computers.
    3. Table seating is limited to four to a table, unless your group obtains special permission from the librarian.
    4. Do your best to learn and find interesting materials, discover new ideas and read motivating books!

NOTE: When you visit us, you MUST remember to have your Warrior Planner as a pass with you. It is also helpful to have change or dollar bills in case you wish to make photocopies. The library has 1 photocopy machine ($.05 per page.)

Passes:

Students may visit the library during anytime of the day. Once you are in the library on a pass, you must remain in the library. If you need to leave the room, please ask one of the librarians to write a pass on your Warrior Planner.

Visiting the library - Teachers and Classes

Classes visiting the library need to be arranged in advance. Please mark the Circulation Desk calendar AND talk with the librarian. The library can normally accommodate up to two classes per period, especially if one is only doing book check-outs. To avoid disappointment, it is best to sign up earlier rather than later, especially if we need to put materials on reserve for your students. When you sign up, it is helpful to have a copy of the assignment for the librarian and let the librarian know if you need any special materials or instruction. It is also useful to mark the time you will be visiting with your class, and what materials you will need (research materials, reference materials, computers, etc.).

Loan of Materials

  • Books: 2 weeks made up of only school days (weekends/holidays, etc. don’t count!), with limited to 4 books at a time.
  • Renewals: You may renew two times, provided no one has requested the material.
  • Reference Books: in library only.
  • Reserve Books: overnight, unless otherwise indicated. Limited to 2.

Overdues, Lost Materials, and Fines

Students having overdue or lost materials, or unpaid fines will not be permitted to check out any additional materials until they have taken care of this obligation.

    • Book Turn in & Check-in: Return books to the circulation drop box inside the library. (If it is after hours, you can try to drop it to a staff person in the Main Office.) When the book is scanned in, the book will be marked "returned" and the late fine will freeze. Remember to check your due date card!
    • Fines: on overdue book fine is $.10 per day. For reference and reserve books the fine is $.50 per day.
    • Overdue & Lost Notices: are sent to students on a weekly basis to students Homeroom or 1st Core Teacher — 8th Graders. Remember to check your due date card!
    • Lost materials: Students will be charged the replacement cost of the lost item, and grades/progress reports may be held per FWSD Policy P5136 & P6137. If you have lost a book or owe over $5.00, please pay the Financial Secretary at the main office who will give you the receipt. Remember to show the librarian the receipt so they can delete your fine and mark your book "lost" so it can be replaced.
    • Can’t Afford to Pay your fine? Students who are unable to pay their fine MUST ask the librarian to set up a "service project" that can help the school and pay your fine. This needs to be documented in writing with the permission of the Principal.

Behavioral Expectations

  • Keep your voice down (to a whisper) because others need a quiet place to study & read.
  • Put all books and equipment back EXACTLY where you found them, because others will need to locate them.
  • Use the computers for school projects only.
  • Put all food and drinks in your backpacks OUTSIDE of the library, because they damage books, computers, and carpeting.
  • Use the library for studying, inquiry, & school work. There are other times & places for chatting with friends.
  • Come in frequently, because we have a lot of interesting books and sources of information.

Computer Use

There are 27 computers and two printers in the Sacajawea Library for student and staff use. Students are required to treat the equipment appropriately and are REQUIRED TO HAVE A SIGNED COMPUTER USE AGREEMENT in order to use the technology. You MUST log onto the network with your own login & password. Don't forget to log out when you are done.

If you need to print, please ASK FOR PERMISSION. Print preview and avoid wasting printing resources!

Please DON’T WASTE PAPER and TONER!
