Saghalie students went on science field trips to Redondo Beach on April 9th (STEM Academy), 10th (6th/7th Grade Traditional), and 11th (8th Grade Traditional). They learned about the effects of people, animals, plants, machines, and pollution on the water and other parts of the Puget Sound ecosystem. Students explored a variety of scientific experiences including mapping the beach, identifying creatures along the shore, measuring properties of the sea water, looking at plankton in microscopes, observing marine life at the MAST Aquarium, and learning about microplastics. The overall goals of the trip and related classroom lessons were for students to learn how the parts of the Puget Sound ecosystem interconnect, to understand the importance of Puget Sound in our lives, and to act in ways that make the Sound healthier.
