3) Vote to grant money to Saghalie from out proceeds this year for a cause that benefits all Skyhawks.

Saghalie Middle School has integrated science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum at all grade levels of the school. The goal? To create activities which allow students to learn by doing projects that draw on a variety of subject areas. As they do so, they make vital connections between math, science, humanities, and technology.

The Math and Science Academy core philosophy is based on Gateway to Technology (GTT) curriculum, a nationally recognized program that challenges and engages the natural curiosity of students.

GTT curriculum was developed by the nonprofit organization Project Lead the Way, the same organization that provides curriculum for Decatur’s pre-engineering program. This curriculum lets students envision, design and test their ideas with the same advanced modeling software used by companies like Lockheed Martin, Intel and Sprint.

They study mechanical and computer control systems, like robotics and animation. Students also explore the importance of energy, including innovative ways to reduce, conserve and produce it using solar, thermal and wind power. The knowledge that students gain and the skills they build from GTT create a strong foundation for further STEM learning in high school and beyond.

In schools around the nation, students who participate in Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and STEM programs do better in school and are more prepared for college and careers. And students get significantly higher scores in reading, math, and science. In some cases, they receive high school credits while in middle school and receive college credits while in high school.

Check out some examples of classroom activities on the GTT webpage.

Using Kids’ Curiosity to Ignite Learning

For today’s students, learning through technology is as natural as picking up a video game controller. By using students’ interest in technology to teach them science, math, humanities and engineering (STEM) concepts, this program sets the stage for their success in high school and college, and in careers in these types of fields.

At Saghalie, all students are equipped with one-to-one technology as part of their learning tools. Using current technology and authentic hands-on activities allows them to learn important concepts in intriguing new ways.

Much of the learning takes place through project-and problem-based assignments, inquiry, laboratory and field work. These also teach students about teamwork and collaboration. Recently, 7th grade students participated in a “Mission to Mars” simulation at the Museum of Flight. Last year, the entire student body participated in investigations at the Highline Community College Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Center at Redondo Beach.

What Does Your Student Want To Be?

The Math and Science Academy at Saghalie is a great place to start if your student is interested in taking part in the engineering program at Decatur High School and/or wants to study science, technology, engineering or math in college.

No matter what your student wants to do, the academy will help him or her establish a strong aptitude for learning and do well in school, and in life.
