Welcome to Sequoyah Middle School. It is our privilege to guide your child on the middle school portion of his/her educational journey. Sequoyah is Federal Way's newest middle school, and it was designed to enhance learning. One of the first things you notice upon entering Sequoyah is the grand commons area with soaring wood pillars rising two stories. Known as the Forest, this space gives students room to participate in a wide variety of learning experiences. Activities have included hot air balloon launches and jazz band and orchestra performances. Intersecting the Forest are three houses each consisting of two stories. The four classrooms on each floor form a pod. Teachers in each pod guide their students through a wide variety of strategies and curricula that put into practice the Sequoyah principles of rigor, relationships and relevance.

Rigor. At Sequoyah we strive to provide all students with meaningful academic challenges . In humanities the primary curriculum for our Pre-Advanced Placement students is called Spring Board. This College Board designed curriculum provides identified students with a rigorous, grade level course of study that prepares students for the challenges of the Advanced Placement Program in high school. Spring Board is comprised of text and strategies organized around six thematic units at each grade level. All Sequoyah humanities teachers have been trained in the Spring Board curriculum and its application. Likewise, in math students are provided opportunities to build upon their current mathematical ability through three levels of math offered at each grade level. Relationships. Research clearly points to student-teacher relationships as the single greatest predictor of student success. At Sequoyah, 6th grade teachers and their students move up together ( "loop" ) to 7th grade. This consistency maximizes the relationships among students, teachers and parents. In addition, the architectural design of our building with the pod common areas, called "flex spaces", provides excellent areas for teachers and students to team and learn together. Relevance. Located on forty-three acres of wetland, Sequoyah is the perfect outdoor lab setting for reading, writing, math and science. Enhancing this experience is a student/parent/staff constructed trail system for classrooms to venture into the surrounding habitat and conduct scientific observations and experiments!
