AR (Accelerated Reader) Overview

It is great to have access to so many AR quizzes this year! Many people have asked how to find 'Just Right' books with quizzes so here are some ideas.

At our Sherwood Forest Library

  • Books with quizzes are being color coded by reading level. (Thank you, dedicated volunteers!)
  • Quiz information is being added to our library database for students to access on our library look-up stations. (Thank you, Mrs. Sharpe!)
  • Use AR Book Finder on the computer to see if one of our books has a quiz.

From home or a public library

Follow these steps on www.arbookfind.com if you want ideas of books to read.

  1. Click on Advanced Search.
  2. Fill-in reading range by ATOS Book Level ____ through ____ (and topic if you'd like).
  3. Click Go.
  4. You will get a list of books in that reading range.

Follow these steps on www.arbookfind.com if you have a book and want to see if it has an AR quiz.

  1. Click on Advanced Search.
  2. Fill-in the title of a book you have.
  3. Click Go.
  4. You will discover if there is a quiz for your book.

NOTE-We have access to all of the quizzes found on AR Book Finder but we do NOT have all of those books. If a student gets a book listed on AR Book Finder from home or a public library s/he may take the quiz at school.

Questions? Please ask your child's teacher, our librarian Mrs. Gillespie, or our Library Assistant Mrs. Sharpe. Below is the website link for Accelerated Reader book lists:

  • Kindergarten - 5 points
  • 1st Grade - 20 points
  • 2nd Grade - 40 points
  • 3rd Grade - 60 points
  • 4th Grade - 80 points
  • 5th Grade - 100 points

Accelerated Reader Home Connect: What Parents Need To Know

Accelerated Reader (AR) is boosting students' reading at Sherwood Forest, and now parents can go on-line to track their child's progress! Using Home Connect you can log onto any computer (using your child's individual User Name and Password, and: 1) View the results of your childŐs last AR quiz and overall progress; 2) Find books that have Accelerated Reader quizzes; 3) View "My Bookshelf," which shows all the books on which your child has taken an AR quiz.

HereŐs another bonus from Home Connect: Parents and guardians may specify up to six e-mail addresses to receive updates of student progress via e-mail. The recipient must accept the invitation for the notifications to begin. E-mails will be sent automatically by the program and will contain results of any AR quizzes your child completes. Imagine that! An e-mail notification every time your child takes an AR quiz at school!

Log on today to:

Remember to save your child's User Name and Password in a secure location. We hope this service will improve students' reading by keeping parents well informed! Don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher if you have questions about our AR program, or your child's progress!

Battle of the Books Overview

Attention Intermediate Teachers: Mrs. Gillespie is getting ready to introduce the Battle of the Books competition to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. She will provide a display with information, bookmarks, etc. in the library by student-led conferences. Students may start forming teams any time but Mrs. Gillespie will wait until January to start recording team members. Practice for the Battle of the Books competition will begin sometime in February--probably short blocks of time during lunch recesses because of library classes during the longer recesses. It's great for teachers to read these books to classes--ask if you want any suggestions (or cautions). (A list of the books is available below, or is available from Mrs. Gillespie.) Please encourage your 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students to participate in our Battle of the Books program!

The 2010 Sherwood Forest Battle of the Books will be held on Tuesday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the gym. The district competition will be held at Decatur High School on Wednesday, April 7.
