As part of the capital levy Silver Lake would receive surfacing and play structure replacements for our playground!
Federal Way Public Schools is running two levies as part of the February 14 election.
1) The Educational Programs and Operations Levy
The Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) levy will extend
local funding for our schools for two more years beginning in 2013. The EP&O levy enables the district to pay for educational programs and services, including teaching staff, not funded by the state. This includes additional and expanded instructional programs, athletics and activities, technology and security staff and additional transportation.
Local financial support is needed more than ever.
With another round of state budget cuts coming during this legislative session, our local taxpayers can help shield our students from the cuts Olympia is currently considering. Passing this levy will go a long way toward maintaining services and programs our students need and parents expect.
2) A Capital Levy to Rebuild FWHS, Update Playgrounds and Enhance Security Cameras
Local taxpayers have the opportunity to rebuild Federal Way High School, the district’s oldest school for our students and future generations — but pay only a little more than one-half the actual cost to rebuild the school. In addition, aging playground equipment at nine of our elementary schools will be replaced and 10 will receive upgrades during the six-year capital levy.
FWHS’ need is great, and the opportunity is even greater. The total construction cost will be $110 million. Our community’s contribution will be $60 million over the next six years. The rest will be made up with funds remaining from the previous bond measure and anticipated state match funding – money that legally can’t be used for anything but construction costs.
By running a capital levy rather than a bond measure, the district will save taxpayers an estimated $29 million in interest — and the school will be paid for in six years.
Video Tour Shows Federal Way High School Beyond the Pretty Entrance
Federal Way High School may have a remodeled exterior, but behind that façade the school needs more than a makeover. As the school, now more than 80 years old, continues to deteriorate, it’s becoming harder to support a quality education for the students who attend there.
Take a video tour of Federal Way High School and hear from students, staff members, community members and the children who will one day attend the school.
A capital levy that voters will decide on February 14 will give local taxpayers the opportunity to rebuild the district’s flagship school for future generations – at close to half the cost of construction. Read more at www.fwps.org/info/levy.
