Revolutionizing Instruction, Grading, and Assessment for the 21st Century Learner
When a person goes for a walk in the woods, he can easily get lost without a map. Similarly, in a traditional education system students can easily get lost if there are not clear, consistent expectations. Students need a map for success, and in a standards-based education system students are provided that map through scoring guides that outline how to succeed. In standards-based education, consistent feedback and ongoing communication are provided through grades.
Educational reform in the United States since the late 1980s has been largely driven by the setting of academic standards, or learning goals. Standards are targeted learning goals established on a state, national, and international level. In standards-based education, grading and assessments focus on a student’s performance over several opportunities rather than merely averaging tests and quizzes.
