What is Special About Our School?
Star Lake’s mission is to create a safe, kind, and productive learning environment that encourage students to reach their fullest potential. This is more likely to occur in an atmosphere filled with success—a stimulating, positive, and nurturing school that emphasizes academics, standards-based teaching, learning and assessment, creativity, critical thinking, and physical well-being.
Star Lake Elementary serves approximately 414 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade, most of them from the surrounding residential neighborhoods. On a typical day, 95% of Star Lake students are in attendance.
The school staff uses a balanced approach to reading, problem solving, application to math with focus on computational fluency, and the 5 step writing process, variety of teaching strategies and resources to maximize learning for all students. It is this school’s goal that all children will meet and/or exceed the standards outlined by the state and district in reading, mathematics, and writing. Performance and formal assessments are used to guide instruction and document growth over time. Every student is assessed in writing, reading, and math in the fall and spring.
Star Lake students and their families have many enrichment opportunities. The school-wide Hopeful Employment Learning Program for Students (HELPS) allows students to apply for school jobs performed during recess time. Students have access to the Internet for research, as well as other educationally related projects. A Family Resource Center allows families’ access to the Internet, library books, and resources for their children, and special literary presentations. A multicultural night celebrating the diverse cultures of the students is a culminating family event in may.No Child Left Behind Report Card
The No Child Left Behind Act requires all schools and school districts in the United States to prepare annual reports for parents and the public detailing their academic achievement. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s web site makes this information available on-line. Find your school’s report card on-line at http://reportcard.ospi.k12.wa.us/ Click on Federal Way in the “Summary” box, then choose your school from the list. You may also request a paper copy of the report card at your school’s office. For more information about the NCLB Act, go to http://www.nclb.gov/index.html.
