Message from
Principal Brower
Northwest College Preparatory Academy is
committed to helping all our students qualify for entrance
into a top university. We truly believe that Every Student
must be College Bound Every Day. Every class offered in
our academy is designed to fulfill an admissions requirement
for top universities and to prepare our students for success
when they get there. In order to fulfil our mission we
focus on four pillars of success:
Rigor: Every student
in NWCP is enrolled in rigorous classes, beginning with
a full Pre-AP schedule in 9th and 10th grade, and culminating
in Advanced Placement Classes in 11th and 12th grade. We
recognize that these courses are tough and challenging,
but we know from experience that university courses are
tougher.
Skills: Every class in NWCP academy
focuses on effective skills and strategies for gaining
content knowledge and exploring new learning. Every teacher
uses Cornell Notes, Socratic Seminars, and Inquiry to facilitate
a process where our students learn how to learn. This intentional
focus on skill acquisition helps students become independent
learners. For example, we know that in college teachers
do not GIVE notes, it is up to the students to TAKE them,
so we use this time to give students the tools they will
need as they achieve their goals. These strategies are
the same they will encounter in college and the consistency
across the curriculum truly sets our students up for success.
Support: Because our courses are rigorous
and our goal of university entrance is sure, we are committed
to providing the support our students need to be successful
in their current classes, and in achieving their college
goals. We offer the AVID elective to support our students.
In this elective they learn skills and strategies that
they can use for their learning, both independent and in
concert with teacher presentation. They also have weekly
binder checks to ensure that they stay organized and on
track. Students are also supported in their work by weekly
tutorials in AVID where college graduates guide them through their
questions. Our teachers also meet weekly to discuss student
needs and contact parents regularly to notify them of progress.
Our academy is small--60 students per grade level--so we
have an increased ability to support our students. Finally,
we support our college focus by having speakers come and
address our students monthly, and by visiting local colleges. Determination: Every NWCP student must provide
the determination to work hard and to succeed. It is not
easy, but it is worth it.
With the focus on rigor, skills,
support, and determination, together we will help you
achieve your dreams!
Proud to be a Titan!
