May 2, 2008
Dear Parents and Guardians,

This morning, calls were placed to 911 and to our security office saying that an individual was planning to perpetrate an act of violence at an unnamed school today at lunch time. High schools heightened their security levels and at this time, with the lunch hour past, there has been no attempt at any school. The individual named by the caller is actively being sought by the police. If you are aware of anyone who has indicated - either by their words or actions - that they may be a danger to students or staff, please call 911 immediately, or call the Safe Schools Tipline at 253-945-7233.

Sincerely,

Mark Davidson, Deputy Superintendent

School Lunch Program - USDA Places "Hold" on Beef Products
On Thursday morning, January 31st, the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) notified school districts in Western Region to "hold" beef products from one of their suppliers for school lunch programs.

Since beef products were not being served in elementary schools on Thursday, we contacted secondary schools, and immediately removed all beef items. As a precaution, we will not be serving beef products in school lunches until we receive a full release and direction from the USDA.

Our February menu were printed prior to the USDA "hold" and beef products are listed. We are substituting other foods (such as chicken etc) on those days

Todd Beamer Thunderbolt Annual Wins NSPA First Class ranking

On January 14, 2008 the 2007 Todd Beamer Thunderbolt Yearbook received word that they earned a First Class Ranking with a Mark of Distinction from the National Scholastic Press Association during their national critiques and competitions. This is the second straight year that the book has earned such an honor from the NSPA. The book themed "Unfinished" also earned 7th place internationally at the JEA national Competitions in Philadelphia during November and a national Silver Medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in October.

The First Class ranking is given to less than 50 yearbooks nationally each year with only the mark of "All-American" (First Class with four Marks of Distinction) being considered better. The mark of distinction was given for the development of theme and concept throughout the book. The NSPA judge said that this book "has a great deal of personality." Additionally, the staff missed two of Marks of Distinction, for photography and coverage by less than 20 points, earning 450 out of 500.

Three members of the 2007 staff, edited last year by current WSU student Jonathan Parrott, are on the 2008 staff, Seniors Jilly K., Becky L., and Christina K. This is the third year in a row that the Todd Beamer yearbook has been recognized nationally for its ability to create a high level professional publication.

Beamer Girls Soccer Team comes shockingly close to the State Title - fueled by awesome school spirit from Titan fans - Way to go Titans!

From the Tribune write up of the weekend matches:

Beamer Comes oh-so-close

From the write up of Friday's win:

"Todd Beamer (20-1) had the biggest fan support of the day, easily filling over half the visitors’ bleachers with vocal students who finally got to cheer in the 47th minute when the Titans scored the only goal of the match."

Regarding Saturday's heartbreaker:

"If the scoreboard hadn’t so clearly read “Eastlake 2, Todd Beamer 1,” you might’ve thought it was the Titans who had won the Class 4A girls state soccer title on Saturday night at Harry Lang Stadium.

Of course, it was the Wolves who took home the trophy. But Beamer’s fans didn’t let that inconvenient fact – or the painful shootout loss that capped Eastlake’s comeback – dampen their enthusiasm at the five-year-old school’s first trip to a title game in any sport.

“Let’s go Beamer! Let’s go Beamer!” quickly drowned out any cheers from the victors’ side.
