GENOMICS OUTREACH FOR MINORITIES: The GenOM Project’s Alliances for Learning and Vision of Underrepresented Americans’ (ALVA) is a summer outreach program for incoming University of Washington freshman (class of ’09) and rising high school seniors(class of ’10) interested in genomic, life sciences, ecogenetics and bioengineering. A minimum of 12 students will be selected. We strongly encourage application from the following students:
- From underrepresented minority group(i.e., African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians, Filipinos and Pacific Islanders)
- Economically disadvantaged
- The first in their family to attend college

POINT DEFIANCE ZOO & AQUARIUM: The Youth Volunteer Team is a select group of local students that work as on-grounds informal educators at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Students working with the Youth Volunteer Program will not only gain an increased knowledge of animal biology and conservation issues, but they will also hone their public speaking skills while gaining valuable work experience in a zoo and aquarium setting. Applicants must be at least of 13 years old and high school students entering 9th-12th grade(or the equivalent if home schooled or in the Running Start) during the 2009-2010 school year.
