EALRs

This class is designed to introduce the basic American Sign Language (ASL) in an expressive and receptive format. Emphasis will be placed on development of sign retention and application of newly acquired concepts, as well as study of Deafness, from a cultural point of view.

1. The student acquires the knowledge and necessary skills to create and perform basic signed communication. To meet this standard, the student will:

1. Comprehend and communicate what is being signed.
2. Express an appropriate response to a signed signal.
3. Acquire new signed concepts on a regular basis, that incorporates the ASL 1-2 Core vocabulary as outlined in the current curriculum.
4. Read with comprehension information pertaining to Deafness that allows students to build on expressive and receptive signing.
5. Apply the appropriate expressive and receptive language components as outlined in tech ASL Tech-Prep Competency profile.

2. The student knows and applies American Sign Language in a context that includes reasoning and problem resolution within a social and civic setting. To meet this standard, the student will:

1. Integrate cultural understanding and language concepts through individual an group presentations, writing of paragraphs, and /or projects.
2. Investigate culture and language concepts to communicate through classroom discussions, short readings, and/or research.
3. Integrate cultural understanding and language concepts through individual and group oral and/or written projects.
4. Read with comprehension information pertaining to Deafness that allows students to enhance understanding of cultural norms and community values.

3. The student will problem solve and think analytically when communicating in ASL. To meet this standard, the student will:

1. Develop and apply the ability to combine facial expression, signs, varied ASL grammatical structures and body language to convey a signed message.
2. Compare and contrast elements of facial, visual, and body language to determine appropriate responses.

4. The student understands how American Sign Language connects to the subject areas including life and work. To meet this standard, the student will:

 

1. Analyze how ASL can relate to their world outside of the classroom, by including social and vocational interactions with others who are Deaf.
2. Self-evaluate both receptive and expressive sign skills, and note progress.
3. Provide evidence of outside-classroom use of ASL on the consistent basis.
