WASL News
Summer WASL information:
The August WASL is August 11-14 at Federal Way High School.
We will be getting the scores for 10-12th graders by June 2nd,
and they will be able to sign up for the August WASL starting June 9th.
*All students in the class of 2011 and above can retake the WASL in August*
Also, Juniors who did not take the Spring Math WASL,
must take the August WASL in order to stay on track for graduation.
August Schedule:
Monday, August 11 – Reading Sessions 1 and 2
Tuesday, August 12 – Mathematics Sessions 1 and 2
Wednesday, August 13 – Writing: Expository
Thursday, August 14 – Writing: Persuasive
Registration runs June 9-27th, and they must preregister on the OSPI website

There will be no before or after school clubs or programs and
no activity bus will be running during WASL week.
There will be sports activities after school.
The student store will be closed both Monday and Wednesday during WASL
testing for lunch because we do not have a 1st period Marketing Class.
We will still be open before school and after school on those days.

During testing we will be running AP seminars for Math and Science.
We will also be running 13 year plan workshops, and we are planning a college application workshop
for those who have already met standard on the WASL.

When is the WASL?
March 10-11, 7:30-11:30AM Reading WASL

Who needs to take the WASL?
- This year ALL 9 th graders, including those receiving ELL and IEP services, will take the Reading, Writing, and Math portions of the WASL.
- Any 10 th , 11 th , or 12 th grader who has not yet met standard in Reading, Writing, or Math, or one of the equivalents, needs to take that portion of the WASL.
- All 10 th grade students with an IEP must take the HS WASL
- Additionally, all 10 th graders will take the Science WASL
Why should ALL 9 th graders test?
- Taking the test in 9 th grade, gives ALL students the opportunity to become familiar with the content and format of the high school WASL before they are required to take it in 10 th grade, which will help them be more successful in subsequent years.
- It also gives them the opportunity to receive specific feedback in the areas in which they still need to improve
- If students meet standard in any section, they do not need to retake that section of the WASL again
Can a student opt out of the WASL?
- 9 th grade students can have their parents complete and submit an opt out form, available on the Todd Beamer Website
- Meeting standard on the Reading and Writing WASL is a graduation requirement
Is the Math WASL a graduation requirement?
- Yes, in order to graduate, students must take the Math WASL every year, until they meet standard on it.
- Students who do not meet standard on the Math WASL their 10 th grade year, in addition to taking the Math WASL yearly, must earn at least one additional credit of math per year until graduation.
Can students make up the WASL if they miss testing day?
- No, there are no make up days. All students across the state test on the same day at the same time
- If students miss a testing day, they will have to take the WASL in August or wait until next year
Do students who have already met standard on the WASL need to come during test time?
- Students who have already met standard on the area of the WASL being tested that day, can participate in 13 year plan workshops, College Application Workshops, or AP seminars during the testing window
- A late bus, running on a modified Activity Bus Route, will be provided and will bring students to campus by 11:20AM
