DRAFT - BUSINESS

High School - Accounting 3-4

This is a Tech Prep Approved course. Students can earn college credit. Students will develop vocational competency, receive pre-college business administration preparation and gain a better understanding of accounting theory. Major areas covered include more advanced problems, specialized records, payroll, departmentalized accounting, cost accounting, corporation accounting and automated accounting. Cost accounting for merchandising and manufacturing businesses plus records for corporations and partnerships will be studied.

  1. The student develops the skills to create and present accurate and effective communication (oral and written) tailored to the specific purpose and needs of the audience. To meet this standard, the student will:
    • Read, write, define, understand and use advanced accounting terminology.
    • Demonstrate the ability to use email effectively and appropriately.

  2. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to determine the correct mathematical process to use for various problem situations and to use formulas when appropriate. To meet this standard, the student will:
    • Prepare a ten-column worksheet.
    • Journalize and post departmental purchase/cash payments, sales/cash receipts and prove cash, and payroll transactions.
    • Journalize transactions for Uncollectible accounts, plant assets, and notes payables/receivables.
    • Journalize adjusting and reversing entries for prepaid/accrued expenses and unearned/accrued revenue.
    • Calculate and analyze accounts receivable turnover rates, calculate and record property tax expense.
    • Record purchases and cash payments, as well as cash receipts using special journals.
    • Account for Uncollectible accounts, plant assets and depreciation, inventory, notes and interest.
    • Calculate, record, and prepare federal, state, and local tax documents.
    • Distribute dividends.

  3. The student applies basic business knowledge and skills to reason and to solve problems. To meet this standard, the student will:
    • Reconcile a bank statement.
    • Complete payroll records.
    • Analyze and interpret accounting case studies.
    • Determine the cost of the ending inventory by the specific identification/inventory method (ie: LILO, FIFO, average cost method)
    • Complete selected interim and end-of-fiscal-period work for a departmentalized business.
    • Complete realistic transactions for a departmentalized merchandising business organized as a corporation, including current procedures learned.
    • Demonstrate the ability to "troubleshoot" typical computer and printer problems.

  4. The student understands how business connects to other subject areas, as well as future career/educational opportunities. To meet this standard, the student will:
    • Listens to speakers in business related careers.
    • Identify career/educational opportunities through advertisements, electronic sources, and other forms of communication.
    • Demonstrate an ability to use the Internet as a research tool in a highly efficient manner.
    • Demonstrate leadership skills through participation in a student leadership organization (ie:FBLA) and school/community activities.
