Course Description
Students will find and discuss remedies for legal problems which any average citizen encounters in business and everyday living. In addition, this course uses practical topics relevant to today’s students to advance critical thinking and problem solving skills while preparing them to be responsible and participatory citizens. Students will analyze famous legal cases, examine the systems of courts on the state and federal levels and learn court procedures through mock-trials and discussion.

  • Application of law to Business Organizations

Objectives

  • An understanding of the need for rules or control in our economic society and the importance of observing the law and respecting law enforcement officials.
  • Develop an awareness of the complexity of law and an understanding of when professional legal advice is the best resource for the protection of an individual's rights.
  • Develop the ability to differentiate among common misconceptions and the actual law.
  • An understanding of our legal system and it’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Knowledge of law involving adults' and minors' contractual rights on the one hand and responsibilities and obligations on the other.
  • Ability to use knowledge of business law for preventive purposes, thus avoiding damaging legal consequences.
  • An appreciation of the dignity and worth of the individual as well as the relationship of law to traditions of moral standards.
  • An understanding of business law enforcement as it affects personal, family and occupational pursuits.
  • Knowledge of legal terms and a basic understanding of common legal papers, their use and their values.
  • Ability to reason and solve problems through the study and analysis of legal cases.
  • Identify civil cases and possible solutions in and out of court.
    Knowledge of legal, para-legal, and related careers.

Pre-requisites
Sophomore needs counselor recommendation

Attendance Policy
Attendance in class is extremely important. Because of the nature of the class, participation in classroom learning experiences is a required part of this course. Be prompt and punctual. Remember that we are all learning to be valuable employees in the business world.

Grading

Lessons include short answer questions, current event reviews, and using factual information in a variety of ways.The type of work students need to complete will fall into these basic categories: 1. Readings 2. Section Reviews 3. Chapter Reviews 4. Chapter Tests, Grading scales for most assignments/tests will be provided at the time of the assignment/test. Grading in this class will be assigned a point value.

**Late papers will be lowered one grade for each day they are late.**

If extra time to complete an assignment is needed because of absence, see the teacher before the due date to make other arrangements.

It is the student's responsibility to check with their work group upon his/her return to school after absence to determine what makeup work is to be completed. All makeup work must be turned in within the same number of days the student was absent. Assignments previously given are due the day the student returns or will be considered late work (see above policy).

Chapter tests' dates are given in advance and students are responsible to write this in their Planner. In the event a student is absent on test day, it is the student’s responsibility to ask the instructor for the test the day they return. Tests must be taken the day the student returns, either during Activity period, before or after school. Failure to do so will result in a zero for that test.

Exams

  • Exams will consist of case problems, short answer questions, definitions, T/F, and/or multiple choice.
  • Points on regular exams will vary from approximately 10 to 20pts.

Daily Assignments

  • A variety of short text assignments with varying point totals will be made.
  • Participation - Because of the nature of this class, participation in classroom learning experiences is a required part of the course. Good participation is essential to success in both school and future work. ed and on task.

Class Discussion

  • Grade based on how willing you are to join actively in class discussion and how your questions and answers pertain to the subject under consideration.

Bulletin Board

  • Team project
  • Each bulletin board should be based on a strong belief you have, a case, topic in the chapter, theme of a unit, or any other reasonable subject relating to law.

Notebook
Your notebook should be kept in date order and divided into four sections (1) All lecture, video, speaker notes, (2) handouts, (3) articles and (4) assignments. Notebooks will be checked and graded periodically throughout each grading period. Grade based on the quality and completeness of the notes.

Special Project
Details given at time of assignment.

Extra Credit (Extra credit will allow you to move up only one grade level)

  • Law career development (15 pts possible for each career up to a maximum of 2 careers per 6-week grading period). Develop an easy-to-understand description of a law-related career. As a minimum, cover education and training requirements, on-the-job responsibilities, pay and benefits, disadvantages of the occupation (if any), availability of positions in the 2010's. Minimum of 2 sources shown and personal summary required.
