Applied Communications Outline

I.                     Outcomes

  1. The student will identify parts and styles of business correspondence.
  2. The student will apply the principles of effective writing for business.
  3. The student will prepare employment credentials and participate in job search and interview activities.
  4. The student will understand ethical concepts, including integrity and confidentially, as related to the business environment.
  5. The student will use business terminology correctly.
  6. The student will apply acceptable grammar and usage rules, proofreading, editing and formatting skills.
  7. The student will distinguish between fact and opinion.
  8. The student will demonstrate an ability to use the Internet as a research tool in a highly efficient manner.
  9. The student will identify career/educational opportunities through advertisements, electronic sources, and other forms of communication.

 

II.                   Essential Learnings

 

The primary mission of this course is to prepare students to communicate in a clear, courteous, concise, and correct manner on a personal and professional levels.  More specifically the student should be able to:

 

  • Develop the skills to create and present accurate and effective communication (oral/written) tailored to the specific purpose and needs of the audience.
  • Applies basic business knowledge and skills to reason and to solve problems
  • Understands how business connects to other subject areas, as well as future career/educational opportunities.

 

III.                 Description of major projects, assignments and homework

 

As an activity-oriented course, students have ample opportunities to work in groups and individually to practice skills, analyze situations, make decisions, and solve problems for real-life situations. Throughout the course, students read case studies, write business communications and reports, and prepare oral presentations in order to develop well-rounded communication skills. The outcome of this course includes students who have a good understanding and skills in communications. This course prepares the student for any other school or work situation in which effective communication skills are required, especially in teaming and leadership situations. 

 

Keyboarding is a prerequisite for this course, and may be taken concurrently.
