Classes: Week 1 Review course outline, classroom/network procedures, and email techniques. Read Chapter 1 in Technical Writing for Success and the article About Technical Writing at http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/acchtml/intro.html. Send an email to the instructor summarizing the key points. Online Technical Writing: Get-Acquainted Memo Go to the following location: http://www.io.com/ Send this email to other students in the Technical Writing Course, as well as the instructor. Create a folder in your personal network directory named Portfolio and it in this folder. Read Chapter 2 in Technical Writing for Success. Write a letter to your employer requesting time off for a special event such as the prom, homecoming, or a family vacation. Then switch roles. Write a letter from the employer denying the time off. Use one of the business formats found on pages 53-58 in your book. How are your letters different? How are they alike? Email the instructor both letters and your response to the two questions. Week 2 Read Chapter 3 in Technical Writing for Success. On page 48 under Consider this Case, do problems 1 & 2 and email to the instructor-don't forget to save your document. Read Chapter 4 in Technical Writing for Success. On page 70 under Apply What You Have Learned, do problems 1, 2, & 3. Email the instructor when you have completed the 3 letters. Next, write an application letter and resume for a job in the technical writing field. Use the site http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/lettov.html to guide you through these projects. Also, chapter 5 in Technical Writing for Success can be an excellent resource as well. Place a copy of the application letter and resume in your directory called Portfolio. Week 3 During this week, you will plan a technical-report project, the details of which you will provide to the instructor/class through email. Use the site http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/acchtml/techreps.htm and the technical-report planner to guide you through the steps of this planning process. Place a copy of the Report project in the Portfolio folder. Also, send the Topic Planner to the instructor through email. Read Chapter 14 for background information, which reviews research techniques that should be used in your report. Go to Build on What you Know on page 283. Do problem number 2. Go to Apply What You Have Learned and do problem 3 on page 283. Week 4 After you plan the report, you write a proposal in which you propose to write that technical report. Use the site http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/otherrep.html to guide you through the steps of this process. Email your proposal to the instructor. Place a copy of this proposal in your directory called Portfolio. Read Chapter 16 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews informal proposal techniques that should be used in your report. On page 328 Consider This Case, do problems 1 and 2 and write an informal proposal to the situation. Email to the instructor. Read Chapter 17 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews the formal proposal techniques that should be used in your report. On page 362 Consider This Case, and do problems 1 and 2 and write a new proposal for this situation. Email to the instructor. Week 5 For this week you will study instructions as well as headings, lists, special notices, and graphics-important elements you will need to incorporate in your instructions. Use the site http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/acchtml/instrux.html to guide you through the steps of this process. Use the instructions planner to guide you through all the phases of this project. Email your instructions to the instructor. Place a copy of the instructions in your directory called Portfolio. Do Apply What You Have Learned on page 183-184, all exercises 1-5. Read Chapter 9 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews instruction techniques that should be used in your report. On pages 185/186 Consider This Case, select problem 1 and write a new set of instructions for this situation. Email to the instructor Week 6 This week, you write a complaint letter or inquiry letter (but not both!). Use the site http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/acchtml/lettov.html to guide you through the steps of this process. Email your letter to the instructor. Place a copy of the letter in your directory called Portfolio. Read chapter 2, and then go to page 29. Do Apply What You Have Learned and exercises1-3. (Do all parts in exercises number 3.) Week 7 Read Chapter 7 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews the News Release techniques that should be used in your report. On page 134 Consider This Case, select problem 1 or 2 and write a news release for one of the situations situation. Email to the instructor. Place a copy of either problem 1 or 2 and the News Release in the Portfolio folder. Read Chapter 8 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews design elements that should be used in your report. On pages 165/166 Consider This Case, do all five situations and present this information. Email to the instructor. Go to Pursue an Idea on page 166 and do step 1. Week 8 This week, start working on the recommendation report. Use the site http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/acchtml/feas.html to guide you through the steps of this process. Email your Recommendation Report to the instructor. Place a copy of your recommendation in your directory called Portfolio. Read Chapter 13 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews the recommendation techniques that should be used in your report. On pages 263/264 Apply What You Have Learned, select problems 1 and 2 send your responses to the instructor. Do Consider the Case on page 265. Also, do Pursue an Idea on page 266, step 1. Week 9 For this week, develop a progress report, in which you summarize the status of your technical-report project, for presentation as an oral report. Use the site http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/acchtml/progrep.html to guide you through the steps of this process.We will also be using the textbook as well. Email your Progress report/oral report to the instructor. Place a copy of these documents in your directory called Portfolio. Read Chapters 6 and 12 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews oral and progress techniques that should be used in your report. Summarize your progress report in PowerPoint and deliver to the instructor orally. On pages 243/244 Consider This Case, select problems 1-3 and send you response to the instructor. Also, do Pursue an Idea on page 118, problem 1. Week 10 For this week, develop an abstract for your report. Use the site http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/acchtml/partsov.html to guide you through the steps of this process. Email this abstract to the instructor. Place a copy of the abstract (informative report) in your directory called Portfolio. Read Chapter 10 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews Summary and Abstract techniques that should be used in your report. On page 200 Pursue an Idea select problems 1, 4, and 6 and email to the instructor. Week 11 Read Chapter 15 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews data collection techniques that should be used in your report. On pages 306/307 Conduct Your Own Research, and select problems 1, 2, and 4. Email the problem to the instructor. Also, do Apply What You Have Learned; problem 2 on page 307. Week 12 Keep working on your final report. Read Chapter 18 in Technical Writing for Success for background information, which reviews Technical Reading techniques. On pages 382/383 Apply What You Have Learned, select problem1 and email to the instructor. Do Conduct Your Own Research on page 381, problem 5.
