TJHS Student Success Conferences

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Thomas Jefferson High School will conduct Student Success Conferences (Student-Led Conferences) on April 17–19, 2013.  At the Student Success Conferences your student will share his or her progress in each class.  Teachers will be present to provide valuable input.

Our Student Success Conferences will be held within the Cafeteria, Deuce, Commons and Library, to provide improved access to teachers.  All teachers will be present during the hours outlined on Wednesday, April 17 and Thursday, April 18.  Teachers will only be available by appointment on Friday, April 19.

It is our hope to get 100% of our students and parents attending our Student Success Conferences.  Please set aside some time during April 17, 18 and 19 to speak with your child’s teachers.  It is vitally important to know how your child is progressing.  School/home collaboration is critical for every student to achieve success.

We will have refreshments available, college scholarship and admission information, school program details, translators, celebration of student performances in band and chorus, child care availability, and resource availability information.  It is our intention to make our Student Success Conference a valuable time for students, teachers and parents to maximize every student’s chance to be successful.

Our conference schedule is deliberately designed to be flexible for your convenience.  Please drop in any time during the intervals listed above on Wednesday, April 17 and Thursday, April 18.  We have some additional times available on Thursday and Friday if none of the indicated times work for you.  Please contact the teacher by Monday, April 15 if you wish to schedule an appointment.

Please note:  No transportation is provided for Student Success Conferences.

Our historic year came to a conclusion last night when we lost to Curtis in a hard fought game.  We found ourselves in a deep hole early, but just like we have all year long, we fought back with tremendous desire and pride.  The kids showed great character and resiliency throughout the game.

As a TJ alum and someone who has been around the program for a long time I can tell you that the support this year, not only from the students, but also the staff, has been overwhelming.  We must have had 40 staff members there last night.  People who were willing to give up their Saturday night to support their school and the children that attend.  It was a sight to see.

I am so proud of the kids on my team for all they have given for the past few months.  It is not an easy thing to get to the final 16 teams in the state.  In fact, it has never been done in school history.  I’m so happy that they were able to take part in that achievement.

There are a lot of great things about sports.  But perhaps the biggest is the way that it can bring together a community.  From the raucous student section, to the phenomenal band led by Mike Lewis, to the admins celebrating in the aisles as we make a good play to the teachers screaming encouragement almost as loud as the students, to the alumni who came back to support their school to the people who just live in the neighborhood and heard we had a good team, it was an amazing experience.

So for the last time of the 2012-2013 season we would like to tell you thank you.  You have helped make this school year and basketball season something the kids will never forget.

This kind of thing doesn’t happen at other schools.  That is what makes TJ so special.  And what makes us all Raiders for life.

Students who are planning to take an AP exam this spring (May 6-17) must register with Rosemary Vaughn at the finance window; the exam fee is provided by the District.  Deadline for registration is March 27th. .

This week is a short week with early dismissal at 12:10 pm on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. There will be no school on Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving break.

On Wednesday the 21st, we will have only three class periods and two lunches. During 1st period, we will hold our annual required Emergency Evacuation Drill.

The drill is sponsored by Thomas Jefferson High School’s Student Emergency Response Club and will simulate the scene that would occur after a shallow 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

All students and staff will evacuate the building and meet outside at designated areas on the football field. The drill is expected to last approximately an hour and a half. We encourage students to dress appropriately for the weather that day; however, students may not bring sleeping bags, tents, etc.
