* Indicates testing year; Students may take a maximum of 2 Standard Level (SL) exams during the Junior Year.

Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) : To be eligible for the award of the IB Diploma, candidates are required to take one subject from each of the six groups.  At least three and not more than four of the six subjects must be taken at the higher level (HL) (minimum of 240 teaching hours).  The other subjects are taken at the standard level (SL), (minimum of 150 teaching hours)

The candidate must meet three additional requirements; submission of a four thousand word Extended Essay; satisfactory completion of the Theory of Knowledge course (TOK – minimum 100 hours); and 150 hours participation in the extracurricular Creativity, Action, Service Program (CAS).

Examinations and the IB diploma: Each subject exam is graded on a scale of 1(minimum) to 7 (maximum).  The award of the IB Diploma requires a minimum total of 24 points and the absence of certain disqualifying(failing) conditions. A maximum of three bonus points may be added to the total score awarded based on exemplary performance in the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.

The Fine Print

Failing or disqualifying conditions: Candidates who have one or more of the following failing conditions will not be awarded the diploma, unless they have accumulated 28 total points or more, and have only one failing condition:

For higher level subjects: a grade 2; a grade 3 not compensated by a grade 5 or above in another higher level subject.

For standard level subjects: a grade 1; more than one grade 2

For Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; a grade “E” on both components

For overall results: more than three grades 3; more than one grade 3 if there is a grade 2 at standard level.

Excluding Conditions: A grade “N” in any component; a grade 1 in any higher level subject; or failure to complete the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, or the Creativity, Action, Service components.
