Today, you will become more expert in the art of deciding which websites are reliable and good to use
for school projects, and which should not be trusted.

Read the article "Evaluating Websites"

a.) Each person in your group chooses one of the following sites which gives advice about how to evaluate websites:

        1. http://www.lib.umich.edu/ugl/guides/evaluation/
        2. http://school.discovery.com/schrockguide/pdf/evalhigh.pdf
        3. http://library.usm.maine.edu/research/researchguides/webevaluating.html
        4. http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/webcrit.html

b.) Each person writes a list of the evaluation criteria recommended on his/her site.

c.) The group meets up again to share information about the sites, and compiles a list of 6-10 items that the group agrees should be considered when a person tries to decide if a website is a reliable, scholarly, and appropriate for school research.

Each team member creates a Word document with a bulleted list of the 6-10 criteria you decide upon as a group in the Second Step. Save this document!

a.) As a team, look at two of the following websites:

        1. http://descy.50megs.com/descy/webcred/webcred/dhmo.html
        2. http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/
        3. http://www.improb.com/airchives/paperair/volume1/v1i1/barney.htm
        4. http://www.weathergraphics.com/tim/fisher/

b.) Using your list of 6-10 criteria, evaluate the two pages.

c.) As a group, complete this sentence twice (once for each page you choose). Each group member types the two sentences on their Word document created in the Third Step.

The site ____________________ would/would not be valuable for school research because ___(list reasons)______________.

Evaluate your list of 6-10 criteria. Did it help you? What other questions should be added to make it truly useful?

Make changes to your list as a group based on your experience in the Fourth Step.

Each group member should make changes on their Word document and save again.

Look at these pairs/trios of websites, and - using your list of 6-10 criteria - choose which of the pair/trio would be the better choice for a student doing research.

      1. http://www.federalwaywashington.com/
        http://www.cityoffederalway.com/

      2. http://www.thocp.net/biographies/gates_bill.htm
        http://www.microsoft.com/billgates/default.asp
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gates
      3. http://www.berner.org/
        http://descy.50megs.com/akcj3/bmd.html

Make your final revisions to your list. Save it, be sure your name is on top - and print it! You will hand your list to your teacher as your ticket out the door today.
