International Baccalaureate offers high quality programs of international  education to a worldwide community of schools

Founded in 1968, there are currently 3,339 schools in 141 countries offering the 3 programs PYP, MYP, and Diploma to over 997,00 students.  There is a 3 year rigorous process to become an authorized IB school.  TJ has been offering the IB Diploma program  since the year 2000Over 325 TJ students have earned the full IB diploma. Many more have earned certificates in from 0ne to six courses. Currently TJ is a candidate school for the MYP program.

The IB diploma program is a two-year pre-university course of study designed to meet the needs of highly motivated students and to promote international understanding for the 11th and 12th grades.  The effectiveness of the IB program is due not only to the depth of the individual courses, but also to the comprehensive nature of the program. Unlike other elective honors programs, the IB requires each student to take courses in six academic areas. In order to qualify for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, students must take written examinations in six subject areas. In addition, the students must complete the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) requirements, the Theory of Knowledge seminar, and the 4000 word Extended Research essay.

Students earning the IB Diploma are awarded advanced standing at prestigious universities around the world. Many colleges and universities recognize the IB Diploma for admissions or course credit.

The IB Middle Years Program -TJ is a candidate school

Life in the 21st century places many changing demands on students making the transition through adolescence. Students in the 9th and 10th grade are at a crucial period of personal, social, physical and intellectual development, of uncertainty and of questioning. The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Program is designed to help them find a sense of belonging in the ever-changing and increasingly interrelated world around them and to foster a positive attitude to learning.

IB Opt Out

Board Policy 2191 states:

Advanced programs and course work are available for all students. When a student has attained established standards for academic achievement and demonstrated acquisition of required knowledge and skills as evidence of preparedness to be successful at the next level, said student will automatically be enrolled in such program/s. This will not preclude the self-selection process.
There is strong evidence of benefits to students who participate in both advanced program courses and exams in terms of higher GPAs, credit hours earned and four-year graduation rates. If your student has met the standard on some or all of the State Assessments, the Federal Way Public Schools will recommend that your student enroll in advanced program classes in the district. If you would like to opt-out of this opportunity for your student, you will need to see an administrator to get your student out of these classes.
