Totem
Junior High (now Totem Middle School) was built in 1963, when
the residents all lived in single-family dwellings. At one time,
Totem had nearly 1200 students which required six portables
behind the school. In 1987 Totem underwent a major remodeling.
The configuration of the school was modified, as well as an
update in fire code items, lighting, creation of a new band
and choir area, and a new library. In
the 1990's lockers were removed to allow more space for classrooms
as well as space for students to move between classes. In the
summer of 1998 the shop area was converted to a computer center
with 2 classrooms, a network administrator office, a reading/writing/math
lab, and career center. There is currently one portable which
houses 4 classrooms.

Totem
serves a diverse community that is currently made up of single
and multi-family dwellings. The community continues to see more
diversity ethnically, culturally and economically. We feel we
can offer students opportunities to interact with many different
kinds of people, and support this through our clubs and activities.

Totem
Middle School has a strong, supportive PTSA. The members are
active, meeting at least monthly and working together to guide
our school. Community members are also invited to serve on our
building leadership team.
We
receive community support for many activities including Veteran's
Day, Career Day, Multi-Cultural Celebrations, and Authors' Day.
