Welcome to AVID 2008/09
AVID CORNER
On Monday, February 9th Totem became a National Demonstration School . This means that other schools around the district, state, country, and world can come and see how AVID works at Totem. This is a prestigious honor for us. All students and staff made this possible, because in order to be a National Demonstration school the AVID strategies need to be school-wide. Way to go Totem!!
On Thursday, February 11 th the AVID program held its fourth District AVID Writing Contest Dinner . The winners were announced at the dinner from a selected group of finalists from each school. A Totem student, Elena Lara-Zillen, won first place. She beat out students from each of the middle schools to take the first place prize. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments. Way to go Elena and to all of our finalists!!

On Thursday, February 19 th we will be celebrating our Third Goal Setters Club Members , those students who met all seven of their semester goals. Every six weeks our AVID students set goals in each of their seven classes. Every week they check their goals against their current grades. This time we have 8 students who have met or exceeded their academic goals. Congratuatlations – Nathen E., Desi W., Ruby B., Brenda S., Charity F., Iliana M, Darby G., and Alyssa K. What time is it? Pizza time!!!!
We will be holding our AVID pinning night and National Demonstration celebration on February 26 th . All parents and students of the Totem AVID family are invited to attend the meeting. We look forward to seeing everyone on February 26 at 6:00 at Totem.

AVID STUDENTS FOR 2008/09
We are looking forward to an amazing AVID school year, with Formal Tutorials, Binder Checks, Guest Speakers, Grade Goal Checks, Field Trips, Reading Buddies, Junior Achievement, Costa’s Levels of Questioning, I speeches, Historical speeches, Goal Setters Club Celebrations, Parent Nights, Avid Site Team Meetings, Avid District Essay Contest, and last but not least,
making new friends and having a lot of fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
Parents, we are looking for anyone who would like to join us for our monthly Site Team meetings. We talk about ways to help our AVID students with their goals in life and how to be successful at Totem Middle School and beyond. We also work on ways to help our teachers with the AVID strategies for their classrooms. We will become an AVID demonstration school this year and would appreciate any parents who would like to join our mission. We meet every last Wednesday of each month.
