MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL CHRISTINE BAKER

Dear Totem Community

We hope parents received the scholarship forms and the new attendance policy sent home with students on Friday March 7. The scholarship is available to all middle schools students in 7 th and 8 th grades who are eligible for free and reduced lunch. It pays for tuition for Washington students during college if they are still eligible when they graduate from high school. To be eligible the student will have to maintain a 2.0 grade point in high school, not have a criminal record and still qualify for free or reduced lunch. Please take advantage of this great opportunity and fill out the form now, have your student return it to their first period teacher. They must apply this year. If you have questions please contact our counselor Mr. Blocki.

We also sent home a new tardy and attendance policy. Please review this policy with your student. Most of our students get to school on time each day, attend all classes and are absent only when they have an excused absence. But some are coming chronically late and have unexcused absences. This policy will assign detention or Saturday School so students can make up time they are missing for unexcused absences or tardies. We hope this will improve their academic achievement and attendance habits. If your student is late or absent, please call or send a note so we know the absence or tardy is excused. It is not our intention to penalize any student for an excused absence or tardy.

Students are taking the District Course assessments this month and again in May. They are important for promotion. If students do not pass this month, please encourage them to come to our after school programs to receive additional help. We have Homework Club and have been offering several math sessions after school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students must pass the competency tests or the WASL to be promoted to high school.

Teachers have been involved in many professional development opportunities this year, and I would like to share with you some of the topics we have been working on. Ongoing professional development and modeling life-long learning is an important value here at Totem. Math and Language Arts teachers attended several days of training before school, have training each month in Springboard and Algebraic Thinking. All our History, Science and Special Education and ELL teachers were trained in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies. On our state in-service training in October, Totem participated in the ADL’s World of Difference Institute. “ The Institute seeks to help participants: recognize bias and the harm it inflicts on individuals and society; explore the value of diversity; improve intergroup relations; and combat racism, anti-Semitism and all forms of prejudice and bigotry.” We have two staff meetings a month where we work on topics such as teaming, vocabulary, and we did a book study of Habits of Mind. At our monthly department and grade level meetings we work on curriculum, lesson planning and other topics to help us work together to improve instruction and share new ideas. Several of our teachers just attended the National Middle School Association Workshop here in Federal Way on March 8. Please talk with your children about how lifelong learning is for all professions. It is predicted that almost 2/3 of our students will be working in a job or profession that has not been invented yet. Most will change jobs many times over their lifetime. In this period of change, it is important for students to learn to think and enjoy learning as much as it is for them to learn about the subjects they are studying. Remind them that learning does not only happen in school, learning is important throughout our lifetime.

Esperamos que padres recibieran las formas de beca y la nueva política de asistencia envió casa con estudiantes el viernes 7 de marzo. La beca está asequible a todos estudiantes de escuela media en las 7th y 8th nota que son elegible para el almuerzo libre y reducido. También enviamos casa una nueva atrasada y la política de asistencia. Por favor examine esta política con su estudiante. La mayoría de nuestros estudiantes llegan a la escuela a tiempo todos los días, asisten a todas clases y están ausente solamente cuando tienen una ausencia justificada. Pero algunos están viniendo crónico tarde y tienen faltas injustificadas. Esta política asignará la detención o el sábado escuela asi que estudiantes poder hacer el tiempo en que están perdidos para las faltas injustificadas o tardies. Esperamos que esto mejore su logro académico y hábitos de asistencia. Si su estudiante es tarde o ausente, llamar por favor o enviar una nota asi que sabemos la falta o atrasado ser disculpado. No es nuestra intención de castigar a ningún estudiante para una disculpado falta o atrasado.

Los estudiantes están tomando las valoraciones de curso de distrito este mes y otra vez en mayo. Son importantes para el ascenso. Si estudiantes no pasan este mes, por favor anímelos a venir a nuestros programas de la escuela en popa de recibir la ayuda adicional. Tenemos club de tarea escolar y hemos estado ofreciendo algunas sesiones de matemática después de la escuela el lunes, el miércoles y el jueves. Los estudiantes deben pasar las pruebas de capacidad o el WASL de ser ascendidos a la escuela secundaria.

Los profesores han estado envuelto en muchas oportunidades de desarrollo profesional este año, y me gustaría compartir algunos de los temas en los que hemos estado trabajando con usted. En nuestro departamento mensual y reuniones de nivel de nota trabajamos en plane de estudios, lección planear y otros temas para ayudarnos trabajar en conjunto para mejorar la instrucción y compartir las nuevas ideas. Varios de nuestros profesores sólo asistieron al taller de la Asociación de middle school nacional aquí en camino federal sobre 8 de marzo. Por favor hable con sus niños sobre qué de toda la vida aprendizaje es para todas profesiones. Es predicho que casi 2/3 de nuestros estudiantes estarán trabajando un trabajo o la profesión que no ha estado inventado aún. Mayoría cambiará los trabajos muchas veces durante su vida. En este período del cambio, es importante que estudiantes aprender a pensar y disfrutar aprender como es para ellos aprender sobre las asignaturas que están estudiando. Recuérdelos que aprendizaje solamente no ocurre en la escuela, aprender es importante durante toda nuestra vida.
