<p>The Career Academy is offering this test for free on May 30, for all students who are graduating or enrolling in Running Start next fall.  See Debbie Washington in the Career Center for details.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica','sans-serif'">While we’ve all become familiar with FWPS standards based education and the power standards, many parents have questions about how expectations will change when we take the next step and implement Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Fall 2013. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica','sans-serif'">The CCSS for English Language Arts includes a shift in our reading requirements at FWPS. Students will be expected to read as much non-fiction as fiction. For most students, this means reading more non-fiction. For some students, it may mean more reading in general. Students should be reading books both at the level that they find easy and at a level they find challenging. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica','sans-serif'">Here are some tips on how parents can help students succeed in reading.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica','sans-serif'">You can help your student learn to use evidence by asking them to back up what they are saying in everyday discussions or arguments. Encourage them to look for facts that back up their opinions, ideas or requests. (Caution: They may learn to use evidence so well that they use it to convince you to change your mind after saying no.)</span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) is being taken by all 10th graders March 12, 13 and 14.  Also testing are students in grades 11 and 12 who have not yet passed the test. Passing the HSPE is a state graduation requirement.</p>
<p>Freshman and upperclassmen who have already passed the HSPE should arrive at their normal time. It is a regular school day.</p>
<p>The next opportunity to take the HSPE will be August 2013.</p>
