Success For All

Believe ...Achieve ...Succeed

Mark Twain uses the Success for All Reading program. Students in first through fifth grade are regrouped for 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction at their reading level. This increases the amount of time for direct instruction in reading.

The reading program in grades K-1 emphasizes language skills and using phonetically regular storybooks. Instruction focuses on letter sounds, listening skills, sound blending, comprehension and self-monitoring strategies.

Second through fifth grade students use the Houghton-Mifflin basal and other fiction and non-fiction reading materials. Learning activities are built around partner reading, story characters, setting, problem solving and comprehension skills.

All students are expected to read books of their choice
for 20 minutes each evening as homework.

The idea behind this program is to organize resources to focus on prevention and early intervention, to ensure that virtually every child will succeed in reading throughout the elementary grades--and no student will be allowed to "fall through the cracks."

The Family Support Team works with parents in ensuring the success of their children. the team focuses on:

What can you do to help your child
be a successful reader?
  • Make sure your child is fed, rested, and on time to school every day ready to learn.
  • Arrange appointments for after-school or at least late afternoon. It is critical for students to be at school during the 90 minute reading time, 9:05 - 10:35.
  • Encourage and support your child's 20 minutes of reading homework each evening.
  • Be involved in your child's learning and offer family enrichment opportunities for your child such as:
  • visit the zoo

    visit museums

    attend cultural events
